Abstract

My aim in this article is to present and analyze the posters created in Poland in the years 1982–1988, i.e. in the period starting with the imposition of martial law and up to 1989, which marked the end of the communist regime. Unlike other kinds of scattered and occasional printed materials, the posters were one of the manifestations of opposition to the extant regime. In my analysis I will concentrate on genological and linguistic issues the results of which are the description of posters as linguistic-graphic communication and a propopal to define the term ‘anti-regime poster’ as well as to determine the limits of its usage. In the article I underscore the specific particularity of the phenomenon with regard to the period in which it arose, its social function, and the role it played in building public opinion.
