Abstract

The goal of this article is to investigate the stylistic function of colour terms in creating the characters’ appearance in the novel’s setting. The article quotes fragments which involve components containing the analysed terms referring to colors. The following work presents the usage of colors to describe the characters’ appearance. It analyses how the writer’s linguistic individuality is manifested in his selection of terms for colors, light, shadows, phrases and comparative constructions which contain a colour terms. This allows one to notice that colors co-create the stylistic composition of the piece, introduce information about the elements of the world shown and interpret it. They shape realistically the life and customs 19th century Poland in Korzeniowski’s novel, which is also full of didactic elements.
