Abstract

This paper focuses on semantic features of flower terms excerpted from Adam Asnyk’s poetry. This article considers both the general meaning of the word flower (without its biological classification) and the specific flowers’ species with their attributed semantic components. The flower’s semantic model was described by using various domains such as: physical features, place of growth, time of flourishing, behavior, attitude towards people. The pre-selected material drawn from Asnyk’s poems reveals some linguistic elements which are – because of their various contexts – the source of numerous semantic modifications. Flowers are being modified in all of the analyzed domains. The domains behavior and attitude towards people reveal very clearly all the shifts in the area of meaning. Asnyk used anthropomorphism to express the metaphysical experiences, the estimation of the historical past and the description of feelings and emotions.
