Tematem przewodnim większości powieści Margaret Atwood jest problematyka społecznego statusu kobiet, ze specjalnym naciskiem na motyw kobiety-ofiary. Kwestia ta staje się szczególnie istotna w jej nagradzanej powieści Ślepy zabójca, familijnej sadze o pięciu pokoleniach kobiet niegdyś szanowanej i zamożnej rodziny Chase. Główna protagonistka i narrator symultaniczny, Iris Chase, opowiada historię swojego życia, ubierając narrację w formę pamiętnika, prawdopodobnie pisanego dla jej wnuczki Sabriny. Pamiętnik staje się jedyną szansą, by umożliwić ostatniej członkini rodu Chase poznanie prawdziwego źródła tragedii, które tę rodzinę dotknęły; jest też szansą, by przekazać nie tyle pewną historię w sposób obiektywny, ile podzielić się osobistymi emocjami i subiektywną wersją zdarzeń. Celem artykułu jest analiza sposobu wykorzystania wątku macierzyństwa w omawianej powieści.

The subject matter of the vast majority of Margaret Atwood’s novels is the questioning of the social status of women, with the special focus placed on their victimization and self-victimization. This is particularly conspicuous in her award-winning Blind Assassin, a family saga of five generations of women of the once-respected and affluent Chase Family. The main protagonist and simultaneously a narrator, Iris Chase, spins the story of her life in the form of a diary, presumably written for her long lost granddaughter Sabrina. Iris’s diary is the only chance to enable the last woman in the family of Chase to learn the true events that led to the family’s downfall; it is an attempt at telling herstory rather than history. The aim of the article is to analyze the way motherhood features in the discussed novel.
