Abstract

In 1989 a bunch of political, social and economic changes connected with the fall of communism took place in Poland. The transformations within the country resulted in the emergence of civic committees. They spread the ideas of freedom, democracy and self-government. After the abolition of censorship, independent periodicals could be launched. The Civic Committee of Sandomierz was the first one in the region to publish its journal entitled “The Sandomierz Land”. It appeared on regular basis from 1989 till 1991. The publication raised the political, historical, selfgovernmental, economic and cultural issues crucial to the citizens of Sandomierz, as well as to the people of the whole region. Nowadays, the journal provides the readers with a chance to examine the changes in mentality and the way of conduct of the inhabitants of Sandomierz in the period of regaining freedom and independence.
