dc.description.abstract | Cracow was an important location for veterans’ organizations in the Second Republic of Poland. Among many others, the first progressive associations of combatants were established there. Many of them were very active for the whole interwar period. One of the various forms of its activity was the veteran’s press. Most of the press titles were issued by “Związek Legionistów Polskich” (the Polish Legionaries Union). The earliest magazine was launched in 1928, however, the first issue of “Legion” (The Legion) – one of the most outstanding of all veterans’ periodicals – was published in 1929. During four years of its market presence “Legion” enjoyed considerable popularity as a magazine where many famous researchers, writers and politicians wished to publish their articles. The covers were designed by the students of Cracow Academy of Fine Arts and the magazine was printed on high-quality paper. Several other interesting titles were published at that time by organizations of Jewish combatants, yet the common problem of all veterans’ press was the budget – many of the titles were edited during the Great Depression, so it was extremely difficult to obtain advertisers and expand the limited group of readers. | pl |
