Abstract

The Revolution of 1905 was a turning point for cities in the Kingdom of Poland, which could develop their institutional system after 40 years of military-oriented and bureaucratic Russian administration. It was also a turning point in development of the press, which – due to the abandonment of preventive censorship became a real opinion-maker. The paper is focused on the issue of politicization of urban press discourse during the Revolution of 1905. The Author interested in the social aspects of the process discourse production, Author analyzes the way the urban press discourse created between 1905–1907 reflected the politicisation of urban life. During the Revolution the urban intelligentsia, which was the social strata located between bourgeoisie and lower classes, and initially supported workers in their economic and political demands, realized that interests and vision of urban life presented by working and middle classes (including the intelligentsia itself) were much more different. It finally enabled the exclusion of workers from the vision of proper urban self-government, which became one of the most important topics in urban press discourse at this time. Politicising the discourse of the press during the Revolution of 1905 can be considered as the important evidence of the whole public life modernization in the Kingdom of Poland at the beginning of the 20th century.
