Abstract

The aim of this article is to reveal the poetics of the story “The Coup de Grace” (1891) by Ambrose Bierce. The formal and content peculiarities of the work are predetermined by the use of the montage principle. The interrelation of the principle in the art of cinema and literary art is presented. The peculiarities of the montage principle in literary art are investigated. It is stated that the use of the given principle as a technique for plot presentation leads to conciseness of the narration on a formal level, plot tension on the level of content and reader’s cognitive activity as it presupposes many “notional gaps” and undertone.
