Kobieta samotna w powieści wiktoriańskiej i polskiej prozie narracyjnej drugiej połowy dziewiętnastego wieku

Abstract

Praca jest próbą porównania sylwetek kobiet samotnych w powieści wiktoriańskiej i polskiej prozie narracyjnej II połowy XIX wieku. Jej szeroka tematyka wymaga selekcji materiału badawczego i ograniczenia go do reprezentatywnych dzieł najbardziej znanych pisarzy epoki. Włączenie do rozważań treści historycznych i socjologicznych umożliwia osadzenie analizowanych postaci kobiecych w kontekście realiów epoki i weryfikację ich prawdziwości na tym tle. Samotność bohaterek rozważana jest w dwóch aspektach: jako brak towarzysza życia oraz jako poczucie izolacji od otoczenia. Przedmiotem analizy są źródła samotności bohaterek, sposoby przeżywania samotności, formy realizowania się w samotności, przestrzenie aktywności oraz zakończenia historii ich życia. Poddane analizie postacie literackie podzielone zostały na pięć kategorii, związanych z zajmowaną przez nie pozycją w społeczeństwie: guwernantki; nauczycielki szkolne i przełożone pensji; kobiety oddane Bogu - misjonarki, dewotki, ascetki, zakonnice; kobiety upadłe - utrzymanki, prostytutki, panny z dzieckiem; kobiety rozwiedzione lub żyjące w separacji. Celem prowadzonych badań jest też próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, na ile sylwetki kobiet samotnych przedstawionych w powieści wiktoriańskiej znajdują swoje odzwierciedlenie w kreacjach bohaterek tej samej kategorii sportretowanych w polskiej prozie narracyjnej II połowy XIX wieku.

This thesis is an attempt to compare the profiles of the lone women in the Victorian novel and Polish prose narrative of the second half of the 19th century. Its wide subject matter requires a selection of the research material and reducing it to the representative works of the most famous writers of the age. The incorporation of the historical and sociological content in the deliberations allows for placing the analysed female characters in the context of the realities of the age and verifying their authenticity against this background. The loneliness of the heroines is considered in two aspects: the lack of a life companion and as a feeling of isolation from the environment. The subject of the analysis are the sources of the solitude of the heroines, the ways of experiencing loneliness, the forms of self-fulfillment of the heroines, their areas of activity and the ending of their life stories. The analysed literary figures are divided into five categories, related to their position in the society: governesses; school teachers and headmistresses; women devoted to God - missionaries, bigots, ascetics, nuns; fallen women - kept women, prostitutes, unmarried mothers; divorcees or women living in separation from their spouses. The aim of the study is also an attempt to answer the question whether and to what degree the profiles of the lone women presented in the Victorian novel are reflected in the creations of the same category of heroines portrayed in Polish prose narrative of the second half of the nineteenth century.
