Abstrakt: | This analysis is an attempt at an interdisciplinary and holistic look at children’s
creative activity and its influence on their developmental processes. Its
main research task is to formulate an answer to the question whether and to
what extent children aged 7-9 profit from the participation in a programme
designed to develop creativity, self-awareness and potential for self-creation,
and whether they gain the competences allowing them to play an active part
in forming their own individual and social identity. Namely, the aim is to seek
an answer to the question whether and to what extent children of the aforementioned
age can gain the competences they need to become the ever more
independent authors of the image, notion, and the concept of Self and, consequently,
co-authors of their own development.
The book comprises seven chapters. The first takes the form of theoretical
analysis which is psychological in character. The issues analysed center on
three key concepts: human development, creativity, and the image of Self. The
chapter emphasises the paramount role of creative and self-creative activity in
the process of human development, and introduces two psychological models
of development devised by the author. The first model is concerned with the
development of human creativity over the entire life span, while the second
deals with the development of Self. The concept of self-actualization, viewed
as the key aim of human development, constitutes the common denominator
of the two models outlined. The assumption is that self-actualization requires
the acquisition of specific cognitive and social competences (including creative
and self-creative competence), and its main condition, a sense of those competences
is, in turn, instrumental in building a sense of self-esteem. The second
chapter argues the necessity of constructing a new, holistic model of education,
positing as its main value the development congruent with the child’s internal
and external resources. The concept of education presented here assigns a significant role to self-creative acts. Existing research and educational activities
geared towards the development of children’s creativity, as well as the research
and activities into the development of Self, are not located within the framework
of a particular theory of human development. Therefore, chapter three
presents the theory of psychosocial development as articulated by E.H. Erikson,
regarded as pertinent, useful, and feasible in educational practice, as well
as, most importantly, consistent with the model of development of human creativity
devised by the author and, simultaneously, accordant with the author’s
model of the development of Self. The chapter also contains an overview of
a few other theories and concepts from a number of scientific fields which are
considered effective in constructing the model of education that fosters the
development of creative and self-creative potential. Chapter three concerns
itself with defining competence and the sense of competence, considered the
most important developmental characteristics of children at the beginning of
their school education as well as indicative of the advancement of their 4th
phase of life. The chapter also provides an overview of the key assumptions
and the structure of the model of education devised by the author as well as
an analysis of the relation between its particular elements. Chapter four contains
a report on the research designed and undertaken with the objective of
verifying the outcome of the Podróże, skarby, przygoda [Travel, Treasure,
Adventure] experimental programme developed within the framework
of „From Potential Creativity to Self-Creation in School” model of education
devised by the author. The assumption is that enabling a child to build a sense
of competence (in the 4th phase of his/her development) and preparing him/
her towards constructing a sense of individual and social identity (in the subsequent,
5th phase of life) is made possible in elementary education by tapping
into the child’s huge creative potential, stimulated through employing three
different work methods. Another assumption is that the content to serve as the
springboard for creative activity undertaken in the fields of visual arts, linguistics,
and music, or engaging motor skills, is to pertain to the Self and to individual,
past and present experiences that can be structured and restructured
in the process of the child’s learning within his/her peer group, in symmetrical
interactions undertaken within the framework of intellectual and existential
dialogue. Chapter five constitutes an analysis of the results of three-year-long
longitudinal and experimental study, the objective of which was to establish the
advancement of the competence to process and create new information relating
to the self and the world, and of the social competence to take advantage
of available resources. The self-evaluation of the aforementioned competences
is subject to empirical analysis. The assumption is that those competences and their self-evaluation constitute the most important characteristic of the pupil’s developmental stage and are key indicators of developing the self-creative
competence, which grows dynamically in the 5th phase of life and constitutes
a co-indicator of the outcome of the development of this phase. Another
assumption is that varying dimensions of the image of Self in children at the
beginning of their school education constitute the foundation for constructing
the self-creative competence while being, simultaneously, its important constituent.
The image of Self, including self-awareness and self-evaluation (the
sense of competence and of self-esteem) are also considered instrumental in
constructing identity, a characteristic which pertains to the zone of proximal
development in children at the beginning of school education. Chapter six is
concerned with searching for the factors which, combined, exert the highest
influence on the range and scope of self-knowledge, considered the basic constituent
of the self-creative competence. Chapter seven constitutes a summary
of research results and formulates the most important conclusions concerning
the theoretical basis and educational practice of working with children at the
beginning of their school education. |
