Abstract

This article offers an interpretation of Artur Daniel Liskowacki’s essay collection Ulice Szczecina (ciąg bliższy) [The streets of Szczecin. A closer look]. Identifying movement as the fundamental category structuring the work as a whole, it examines the extent to which the collection can be situated within the genre framework of the textual passage. The article addresses the question of whether the narrator-flâneur seeks primarily to understand and interpret reality as such, or whether his observation of and engagement with the city serve instead as a pretext for an autobiographical journey and a process of self-discovery. It also explores the ways in which the poetics of strolling shape both the narrative form and the directions of the work’s reflections. Movement and strolling are understood not merely in a topographical sense as acts of traversing urban space, but also as forms of movement between past and present, between the imagined and the documented, and between historical discourse and personal memory. Following the interpretive paths and layers of meaning inscribed onto the urban fabric by Liskowacki, the article considers the image of Szczecin constructed in the collection and the role the city plays in shaping individual and collective experience.
