Abstract

Bishop Stanislaw Lubienski, in charge of the Plock diocese since 1627, was one of the senators distinguished by his serious treatment of his duties to the state and his sense of responsibility for its fate. The Plock diocese, which he took over, included the Plock province (lands: Zawkrzanska, Plock), almost the entire Dobrzyn land, almost the entire Mazovian province (lands: Ciechanów, Lomza, Nur, Różan, Wizna, Wyszogród and Zakroczym). The boundaries of the diocese also included the lands of Warsaw and Liw, a few villages in the land of Czersk, as well as part of the land of Gostynin from the Rawa province and the land of Michałów from the Chelmno province. The bishop was keen to influence the staffing of the more important offices in Mazovia and thus influence various aspects of local life, including politics. It was not uncommon for him to present his candidates for land offices and dignities, for starosties and royal leases, as well as for ecclesiastical positions or dignities. His political authority in Mazovia was unquestioned, and the royalism of the Mazovian nobility facilitated his pro-kingdom policies. Good mutual relations between the Mazovian nobility and the bishop could have been an effective springboard for career advancement. Translated by Stefan Kubiak
