Z badań nad problemami ekwiwalencji idiomów z komponentem hagionimicznym (na materiale języka polskiego i włoskiego)

Abstract

The focal issue of the paper is the equivalence of phraseological units containing a hagionymic component. Such idioms tend to be included in monolingual dictionaries of Italian and Polish phraseological expressions, while excluded from bilingual dictionaries of idioms. Such units reflect Christian culture; therefore, the contrastive analysis of Polish and Italian hagionymic phraseologisms was under taken to compare the units in both languages. It shows that the majority of hagionymic phraseologisms appear only in one of the lanugages compared; therefore, the number of absolute equivalents is relatively smalI. Such units tend to be idiomatic expressions of international character. The number of hagionymie units possessing phraseological equivalents without hagionyms is higher; yet, their motivations differ. Some idioms belonging to this group were motivated by either Polish or Italian eustoms or be liefs associated with the cult of particular saints. The majority of idioms analyzed possess non phraseological equivalents, which influences significantly the stylistics of the translation. It is possible to distinguish a group composed of single-word equivalents of hagionymic units. Moreover, false friends appear in the corpora. The analysis shows that numerous hagionymic idioms belong to recessive phraseology, which may be treated as a reflection of changes occurring in the culture, which renders translation of such units more difficult.
