Abstract

The article is an attempt to understand the last book by John Paul II in the context of the contemporary situation in Poland and in Europe. I especially focus on the dimension of ethnic differentiation which becomes more and more important as a result of intensive international migrations. I refer to these parts of the book which discuss ethnic and national issues. According to John Paul II differentiation is natural and results directly from the human nature. Totalitarianisms of the XX century (nazism and communism) attacked and violated the freedom of individuals and communities threatening this natural differentiation. The attachment to the personal social identity and the ethnic identification formed an effective protection in the confrontation with the "ideologies of evil".
