Abstract

The article "Sensitizing children and teenagers to cultural distinctness as an important element of the day support centres curriculum" presents curricular activity of a social therapeutic centre. Creating appropriate attitude towards distinctness is particularly important taking into consideration the specificity of the wards. The social therapeutic centre wards are the children and teenagers from families with life and education problems, often pathological ones. The wards have often been a Different person - they experienced lack of tolerance for various reasons, such as: family, social class, or religion related ones. However, it also happened that they were negatively disposed towards the distinctness. Creation of the respect for the distinctness enables young people to understand that Different does not have to mean worse. The fact is that the care over the ward - including the aspect of sensitization to widely understood distinctness, here cultural distinctness - should be taken by the family. However, when the family does not fulfil this function well, then this activity has to be taken over by another entity, for example day support centre. It is shown on the example of the social therapeutic centre at the Day Social Aid Centre in Białystok that it is possible to compensate for the family's inefficiency to sensitize children and teenagers to cultural distinctness. The centre's initiatives are conducive to the wards' creative activity, overcoming stereotypes and the creation of the respect for differences.
