PRL jako alternatywa. Wokół emigracyjnych dylematów Jerzego Stanisława Sity

Abstract

Having wandered homelessly through Russia, Iran and India during the war, Jerzy Stanisław Sito settled down in London in 1948 as a fourteen-year old. Since his debut as a poet in 1954 he would contemplate returning to Poland more and more seriously. On numerous occasions he would address the issue in his (unpublished) letters to Jerzy Zawieyski in the years 1955-57. This article attempts to answer why and under what circumstances he took (and implemented in 1959) the decision to re-emigrate. Apart from his private correspondence, of great help in establishing relevant facts were the Polish-community magazines - depicting tensions mounting within the Polish community in exile - and clippings of documents from the Main Office of Control of Press, Publications and Shows (GUKPPiW), selected because they contained indications of political thaw and upcoming changes in editorial policy of the People's Republic of Poland. The research perspective is made complete with the conclusions drawn from the interviews published after 2000 (Sito and Bolesław Taborski) and biographical findings made in the archives of the Institute of National Remembrance .
