Jerzy Putrament - między polityką a literaturą

Abstract

Jerzy Putrament (1910-1986) was a significant figure in Polish history of the 20th century at political, social and cultural levels. As early as during his studies at Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, he became involved in politics evolving from the right-wing Endecja to the farleft. In the People's Republic of Poland, Putrament was very active both in creating the policy of the Polish United Workers Party and in its effective implementation. Jerzy Putrament was an ideologically committed politician, very active, having a mind of his own, and yet capable of being critical of his own mistakes. Although his literary activity went hand in hand with politics, it seldom superseded the latter. The author of the article is of the opinion that what brought Putrament into politics was a chain of historical events and personal passion. The writer remained loyal to politics almost to the end of his days, combining his social and political activity with writing.
