Abstract

The biography of Maria Boniecka is a story of a person whom twists and turns of fate led from Russia through Warsaw and Szczecin all the way to Australia. The 20 years of her work in Szczecin had their ups and downs. She worked as a teacher, a lecturer for the Society for Common Knowledge [Towarzystwo Wiedzy Powszechnej], a journalist, and eventually, a writer. Boniecka's personal story shows distinctly how difficult, treacherous and full of traps was the profession of a writer who wanted to work in the reality of the post-war Poland. A chain of dramatic events led to the decision to emigrate but before this happened Boniecka had to overcome many obstacles and difficulties that stood in her way. After she had managed to leave the country, she did not forget Poland. In her emigrant writing she gave expression to grievances, resentment and bitterness that welled up in her over the years she had worked in the country.
