Abstract

In the People's Republic of Poland era, the position and role of Lviv in the Polish history and culture underwent strict regimentation. Witold Szolginia (1923-1996), born in Lviv, was one of very few authors who wrote about the city. His fictionalised memoirs The Iron Lion House [Dom pod żelaznym lwem] (1971) were an incidental breach in the official line of the state censorship which remained in force almost by the end of the 1980s. Only the emerging second circulation of publications, thanks to which, among others, Witold Szolginia's Lviv poetry was published, created some opportunities to break the state's monopoly on print and dissemination of books. However, only the political transformation and the related abolition of censorship gave him space to creative freedom.
