Abstract

This article aims at reconstructing the reasons why in the early 60s the literary career of Helena Boguszewska came to an abrupt end. It turns out that the reason why the literary collective founded by the writer became dissolved and her writings, old and new alike, ceased to be published (the obvious turning point being 1962) was that she persisted with the ideais of the traditional 19th century socialism so much not in line with the current totalitarian system. Boguszewska has remained universally remembered as a superb newspaper reporter of the interwar period as well as the author of one of the most brilliant psychological novels of that period, namely Sabina's Entire Life [Całe życie Sabiny]). Unfortunately, the fact that after the war her best social novel, socialist in spirit, very akin to Steinbeck's style (most vividly reminding of Tortilla FIat), Tbese People [Ci ludzie] (1933) has never been published is an irreparable loss to modern literature awareness.
