Abstract

The author, calling from the history of Polish literature the category of a Catholic writer, presents three types of literary careers that writers associated with this now somewhat obsolete term might have made in the People's Republic of Poland. A successful political career is epitomised by the lives and works of Jerzy Zawieyski and Jan Dobraczyński. A career within the social circle, with its serious limitations, is exemplified in the lives and writings of Hanna Malewska, Antoni Gołubiew. The third type of career, the most genuine one, is a result of true literary success and denotes religious and Christian credibility. According to the author of the essay, the last case is represented by Father Jan Twardowski and Roman Brandstaetter. In the final passages of the article there is a description of the ways in which writers associated with Catholicism are being portrayed today and the demand to break free from the limitations and distortions imposed by the term so as to enable unbiased literary studies of the texts marked with what was once called sensus catholicus.
