Abstract

Artykuł stanowi refleksję nad możliwościami i konsekwencjami potraktowania map światów wykreowanych na równie z mapami obszarów realnych na potrzeby badań z zakresu historii kartografii. Wskazuje na dwoistość takiej mapy, analogiczną dla dwoistości mapy historycznej, gdyż i mapę literacką można potraktować jako artefakt epoki oraz źródło informacji historycznych. Jednym z warunków jest charakterystyczna dla prac J.R.R. Tolkiena spójność świata stworzona w ramach procesu literackiej kreacji oraz ponadliterackiej subkreacji. Takie podejście rodzi interesujące konsekwencje badawcze na granicach domen, wychodząc poza tradycyjne rozumienie przedmiotów badań niektórych nauk.

At the beginning of the article, the author presents the linguistic inspirations and spiritual roots of Tolkien’s oeuvre and his relationship with the Inklings group. He points to the creation of the literary world as a process of subcreation and the role of maps in this process, and then raises the question of the possibility of treating Tolkien’s maps as objects of interest to a historian of cartography. These maps have their own characteristics and graphic solutions close to those of ancient maps and can be considered a source of spatial information (with the mandatory reference to their possible cartometric properties) and source material. The material is understood both as an object of literary study and as an object describing the created world and its multifarious aspects. A question arises to what extent creation can (and should) be separated from reality within the accepted convention. Can a map, which is a paratext for storytelling, be treated as a historical (rather than literary history) source and analyzed with the research tools reserved for such sources?
