Kosmopolityzm w kontekście wielowymiarowej tożsamości człowieka pogranicza

Abstract

The author draws attention to the distorted understanding of cosmopolitanism, commonly regarded as indifference towards own culture – tradition, and even its expression of contempt or scorn. Cosmopolitanism is still burden with reluctance, in contrast to patriotism, which is positively indexed. Yet the cosmos, as the core of the cosmopolitanism, is not only the world but also the order, in the sense of moral and social development. The author believes that a man living in a cultural borderland, has a particular ability of creating over tribal, transnational and cosmopolitan identity, which combine layers of social and personal identity in a holistic system. In this context, the author points to the multidimensional nature of identity, starting from the family and familial, local, parish, regional, through national, state, into culturally integrated, intercultural, continental and planetary. To the above mentioned, an individual dimension overlaps them (biological, psychological, social, economic, intellectual, cultural, existential, etc.). As a result of the research in culturally diverse families in the Bialystok region and the research on youth from cultural border of Belorussia, Poland, Ukraine the author has developed the concept of the borderland man, which seems to be educationally important in the process of formation multicultural societies.
