Abstract

The November Uprising (1830-1831) as the social phenomenon provides huge source material, including a great number of speeches, press articles, memoirs and songs. This paper presents an overview of the poems sung to the many different melodies, written during the first days of the rebelIion, which reflect or create the variety of emotions of those days. All of those songs are shown in their contexts, in the first place - the everyday patriotic performances in the National Theatre, widely reported in press and memoirs. The relationship between texts and their melodies is also very significant, because in the times of the romantic movement in Poland, the song, espedally folk song, was considered as the 'thesaurus of memory' and needed to be available and frequently repeated, both written and orally.
