Inne spotkanie: Konferencja o dziecku żydowskim w 2020 roku

Abstract

In his short introduction to the 9th volume of Jews of Eastern Poland (Białystok 2021), the author describes the idea of the conference that was scheduled for May 2020. The annual event did not take place due to the pandemic, but to cultivate the tradition of scholarly meetings in Białystok, the participants were asked to submit their papers up to the end of June, and thus to form a quasi-session. Twenty-two researchers from Poland, Great Britain and Ukraine immediately responded to the call. The conference and the volume of proceedings created in this way are dedicated to the Jewish child in Eastern Europe as represented in literature and arts; to the Jewish child in shtetl and ghetto; and to the Jewish child in Podlasie and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The special attention was given to children of the Białystok ghetto (1941–1943), whose history is outlined in the essay “Children of the Białystok Ghetto: History, Lives, Testimonies” by Grażyna Dawidowicz (PhD), a researcher and teacher of the Holocaust history. The author of the introduction to the volume hopes that the Conference on the Jewish child was the last one organized in such a way, and that the next one, planned for September 2021 will be carried out in “traditionally”. The great asset of the “traditionality” – something that we often forget about – is the possibility to meet the speakers and discuss the papers presented during sessions.
