Abstract

The actual problem of the genuine hero of modern literary criticism is examined in V. Makanin’s prose of 1970–1990s. Creative people, artists (in a broad sense) occupy a special place in his system of characters. Traditionally the creative intelligent in V. Makanin's world is a unique thinking person, who is able to see the soul of the world and has the ability to deep understanding of individual and social processes taking place in the surrounding world. During the analysis it was revealed that "seredinnost" can be one of the stages in the course of evolution of the character, but is not regarded as his defining characteristic. For example, broken through mediocrity of mass Igor Petrovich becomes the "genuine" person that provides him to be one of a key figure in V. Makanin’s world of art. As a rule, the images of genuine artists are autobiographical, reflecting their proximity to the esthetic ideal of V. Makanin. While creating such characters the writer carries living-creative process of self-discovery in his texts.
