Abstract

The subject of this essay is the textualization of place, based on resuscitating the memory of marginalized, excluded places, places inhabited by the “historically mute.” As an example of cultural texts that put into practice the idea of rescue history in the region of Podlasie, Konończuk discusses Dana Łukasińska’s drama Antyhona, which relates the difficult history of a village on the Polish-Belarusian border in the years 1942–1947, and the performance entitled Metoda Ustawień Narodowych directed by Michał Stankiewicz, which tells of the pacification of the Orthodox Belarusian population in 1946. Based on the geohistorical fact of “Wierszalin,” Konończuk analyzes the mechanism of creating place through textualization, basing her observations on Włodzimierz Pawluczuk’s Wierszalin. A Reportage about the End of the World and on the activity of the Wierszalin Theater under the artistic direction of Piotr Tomaszuk. The exam ples discussed in this essay provide evidence for the “rescuing” function of regional literature as suggested in the thesis.
