Abstract

Literary studies on the works of Ludmila Ulitskaya often emphasize the presence of the home subject and point out a particular importance it holds in her books. In Ulitskaya’s works this subject is mainly brought up as a family life and domesticity. Seldom does it arouse author’s interest as building interiors. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the importance of living space of the heroes in the novel The Big Green Tent. On one hand literary creation of this space is used as the building blocks of the world presented in the novel and it describes social background true to life. On the other hand it reveals the inevitability of the passage of time, people’s attempts to counteract it and the immutability of human nature regardless of the historical era. The writer brings up those matters in a very gentle way filling up the novel with detailed descriptions of rooms, flats and houses with some specific objects like furniture, trinkets and books.
