Abstrakt: On December 20 , 2017, the Senate of the University of Bialystok unanimously adopted Resolutions No. 2157 and 2156 on conferring the honorary titles of Doctors Honoris Causa upon Prof. Halina Krukowska (University of Bialystok, Faculty of Philology) and Prof. Alina Kowalczykowa (Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw). On April 11 ,2018 at midday,an awarding ceremony was held in the presence of His Magnificence Rector and the Senate of the University of Bialystok, representatives of the academic community,and numerous guests.The laudatory speeches were delivered by Prof.Jarosław Ławski (East-West Chair of Language and Literature Studies, University of Bialystok), who had supervised Prof. Krukowska's nomination, and by Prof.Bogusław Nowowiejski (Department of the History of the Polish Language, University of Białystok), who had supervised Prof. Kowalczykowa's nomination. Next, the floor was given to His Magnificence Rector of the University of Białystok Prof. Robert Ciborowski. The two eminent scholars had been nominated for honorary degrees by the Faculty of Philology; their nominations had been processed by the Faculty of History and Sociology. For this reason, the ceremony was led, on behalf of the organisers,by Prof. Joanna Sadowska of the Faculty of History and Sociology. Professor Halina Krukowska has created the Białystok school of research on Polish and European Romanticism. In 1994, she initiated the Dark Romanticism publication series (as of 2017, thirty-seven volumes have been published in the series) and remained its director until 2007. During her career, Prof. Krukowska has supervised over 250 master theses. She has authored the books „Pan Tadeusz” jako poezja czysta. Studia i szkice o Mickiewiczu ['Sir Thaddeus' as pure poetry. Studies and essays on Mickiewicz] (2016) and Noc romantyczna [The Romantic Night], published in 1985 and reprinted in 2011. With the rise of the Solidarity movement, Halina Krukowska became involved in anti-communist opposition; she was an active member of the Club of Catholic Intelligentsia. She has always had strong links with the Podlasie region, and in particular with Wasilków and Białystok. Professor Alina Kowalczykowa, née Lorentz has published dozens of papers and books on the Romantic art and literature in Poland and Europe as a whole. They include Romantyczni szaleńcy [The Raving Romantics] (1977), Warszawa romantyczna [The Romantic Warsaw] (1987), Manifesty romantyzmu 1790–1830 [The Romantic Manifestos of 1790–1830] (1977), Słowacki (1994), Pisma rozproszone i zarzucone [Writings Dispersed and Abandoned] (Białystok 2014 and 2016, Vol. 1-2). She co-authored Słownik literatury polskiej XIX wieku [Dictionary of the Nineteenth-Century Polish Literature] (1989). Prof. Kowalczykowa is the author of an innovative school textbook on Romanticism and a founder of the 'Province' Association of Humanities Teachers. She is also the founder and manager of the Stefan Żeromski Museum in Konstancin.Most of her life and work has been centred around Warsaw. The reviewers involved in the conferment procedure were, in the case of Prof. Alina Kowalczykowa, Prof. Włodzimierz Szturc (Jagiellonian University), Prof. Kamila Budrowska (University of Bialystok), and Prof. Marian Kisiel (University of Silesia). In the case of Prof. Halina Krukowska, the reviewers were Prof. Bogusław Dopart (Jagiellonian University), Prof. Marek Piechota (University of Silesia), and Prof. Mikołaj Sokołowski (Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences). After the ceremony, the recipients of the honorary degrees joined the guests for a celebratory cocktail party followed by a classical music concert performed by the Rev.Dr Zbigniew Stępniak and the Non Terminum ensemble. A performance of Dąbrowski's Mazurka,Gaude Mater Polonia,and Gaudeamus by the Academic Choir conducted by Prof. Edward Kulikowski added even more splendour to the awarding ceremony. The book includes the academic profiles of the two eminent recipients of the honoris causa degrees, reviews of their works, the justification of their nomination, and their acceptance lectures. The conferment of honorary degrees upon Prof. Kowalczykowa and Prof. Krukowska became the key event th of the celebrations of the 50 anniversary of academic philology in Białystok (1968–2018) held by the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok.
