Abstract

The purpose of this article is an overview of the descriptions of the Odessa Opera Theatre (which used to be called "The City Theatre" in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries) in the literature of the first half of the 19th century. The article contains some memories of travelers about the origin of theatrical life in Odessa and about the City Theatre itself. Numerous evidence of contemporaries has been preserved in memoirs and fiction literature about the functioning of the first City Theater. It was especially noted that the theatre was visited by all segments of the population of the young city. A study of theatre history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries engaged K. Smolyaninov, A. Skalkovski, A. Deribas, N. Murzakevich, D. Atlas, K. Zelenetsky. Their works contain descriptions of the device and repertoire of the first contemporary and stationary theatre in Odessa. Descriptions of the City Theatre from books and essays are given in Russian and Polish. About visiting the theatre wrote I. Dolgoruky, P. Morozov, P. Svinin, K. Batyushkov, M. Rozberg, U. Niemcewicz, J. Krashevsky. The books, except for individual quotes, of two last authors have not been translated into Russian. In the State Archives of the Odessa Region preserved the documents for the construction of the theatre. They were published in the studies of modern local historian O. Gubar. The article based on rare and inaccessible sources.
