Стилистические функции морской лексики в повести К. Г. Паустовского «Время больших ожиданий»

Abstract

One of the reasons for figurative and expressive language effects appearing in a literary text is interaction among different functional style elements. That is why special attention in lingua stylistics is concentrated on analyzing lexical and semantic resources of a language, in particular, of special vocabulary, in functional expressive and stylistic aspects. The usage of terminology in fiction is induced by extralinguistic (science and technology progress, their increasing role in society, scientific knowledge evolution) and intralinguistic (necessity of naming objects and phenomena) factors. In literary speech the focus of lingua stylistics proves to be lexicon stylistic resources, verbal imagery devices, that lend semantic and aesthetic perception to the author's writing. The current research centres upon the sea vocabulary in K. Paustovsky's style of writing, his literary techniques, that create a vivid impression by colourfullness and exactness of words. The study of objects and phenomena in the seafaring arouses considerable interest, as the sea terms and special vocabulary of a particular field (professional vocabulary) in the author's story carry out not only nominative, but also emotional expressive and pragmatic functions, convey a sort of estimation, attitude of the society and the author himself to the events described in the literary text. Among lexical means of expressing additional semantic and connotational meanings in Paustovsky's writing we can distinguish the following: personification (The ship gave a muffled howl), metaphor (A dead sleep on dead anchors), figurative simile (two colourful, like Easter Eggs, Turkish feluccas), epithet (quaint sailing ships), periphrasis (Black Sea street – marine outpost). Thus, the sea vocabulary lexemes played a significant role in creating the image of Odessa in 20's XX century – the years of the civil war, intervention and blockade. They naturally entered Paustovsky's text, developing the atmosphere of romantic elation.
