Abstract

The supreme government of the Paskevich epoch in the Kingdom of Poland – namely the Administrative Council appointed on April 5, 1832, a special Committee for Support of the Judaic Faith Community, with the main task of allocating a total sum of 200,000 Polish zlotys, which was intended to help the Hebrew population of the Kingdom. Thus, the authorities decided to bring to the Jews “a relief in return for their the proper attitude showed to the righteous authorities”. The Governmental Committee on Internal, Spiritual and Public Enlightenment Matters issued then on May 30, 1832, a detailed instruction for the Committee for Support of the Judaic Faith Community. Subsequently, the Administrative Council recommended on June 8, 1832 to the above mentioned Committee “to recognize and deal with all accuracy with [Jewish] requests”. As a result, on November 10, 1832, the Committee for Support of the Judaic Faith Community submitted its formal report, regarding its statutory activities. As it turned out later, similar activities were still undertaken by this institution in the following years of 1833 and 1834, and it should be noted here that the very establishment of the Committee for Support of the Judaic Faith Community undoubtedly marked the positive attitude of the post-revolutionary authorities of the Kingdom of Poland in relation to Polish Jews – who were considered to be “destroyed by war”, and especially favouring the tsarist power. In addition to this formal institutional support, the governing powers of the early Paskevich period in the Kingdom of Poland took up the challenge of regulating the access of all local Jews to available propine activities. The question of reinstating the “entry fee”, collected from Hebrews who came to Warsaw (which had been previously abolished by the insurgent Polish government) was also reexamined. While solving the propinational problems in a way favoring the economic interest of the Judaic community, one can only have some doubts about the desirability of restoring this “entry fee”, collected in Warsaw.
