Moralno-etyczne aspekty pracy bibliotekarza – analiza kodeksów etyki bibliotekarskiej oraz wyników badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych w środowisku bibliotek białostockich

Abstract

The paper will present the postulates of Librarian and Information Worker's Ethic Code compiled by Polish Librarians’ Association in 2005, as well as the latest resolutions of the international Ethic Code for librarians compiled by the members of IFLA (the code was approved in August, 2012. The aim is to expose the most important attributes that a modern and eager to accept new challenges librarian should possess. The bases for this will be the aforementioned documents as well as the survey conducted among the workers of libraries of Białystok. The authors’ observations will be confronted with the opinions of other librarians. The paper attempts to prove that the librarian's job is does not only involve performing many duties and tasks, but it is also a kind of a mission associated with great responsibility for the development and functioning of the society. It is worth emphasizing that despite the great importance of librarians’ work, the status of this profession is still not high and the deregulation process could yet reduce it. Therefore, the ethics code in the librarians’ community is absolutely essential.
