Abstract

On January 14th, 2020, the Faculty of Philology of the University of Białystok had the pleasure to host Marek Zagańczyk, a renowned Polish essayist and publisher. For many years, he worked as a deputy editor­‑in-chief of “Zeszyty Literackie” [Literary Notebooks], a journal well known to every lover of Polish literature and high culture in general. As the curator of Paweł Hertz’s legacy and archives, Marek Zagańczyk has worked on the publication of his selected works. Zagańczyk has authored several collections of essays and literary sketches: Krajobrazy i portrety [Landscapes and Portraits] (1999), Droga do Sieny [The Road to Siena] (2005), Cyprysy i topole [Cypresses and Poplars] (2012) Berlińskie widoki [Views of Berlin] (2019). Much of his activity as an author and amateur historian has been shaped by an enduring passion for Italy. It is not surprising therefore that his talk was devoted to journeys – both literary and real­‑life ones – to Italy and the Mediterranean. The lecture, titled On travel writing, was delivered on a January afternoon in the Faculty Auditorium as part of the Master Talks series of guest lectures, initiated in 2017. The speaker was announced and introduced by prof. dr Violetta Wejs­‑Milewska of the University of Białystok. In his lecture, Marek Zagańczyk focused on twentieth­‑century travel reports and testimonies written in ­prose or in verse. He discussed poems by Constantine P. Cavafy, travel essays by Zbigniew Herbert, reflections of Jerzy Stempowski and Paweł Hertz on travel writing, Mediterranean Winter by Robert D. Kaplan, works by Edward Thomas, Robert Frost, Robert Macfarlane, and Nicolas Bouvier. The fascinating journey through texts and countries, through countries as defined by texts culminated with a praise to gods for ‘having created this world, so beautiful and so diverse’. At the centrepiece of his lecture, there was a reflection on the writings by the Swiss author Nicolas Bouvier (1929–1998): “Bouvier’s travel books were written in preparation for new journeys, new destinations of escape from the mundane. They were part of his struggle with the world, a battle he fought until the very end – a long terminal illness that led to his death in February 1998. For, as Bouvier once noted, ‘A journey does not need reasons. Before long, it proves to be reason enough in itself. One thinks that one is going to make a journey, yet soon it is the journey that makes or unmakes you’. Shortly before his death, Bouvier wrote an essay about his room, a place from which there was no more escape. In that room, he could enjoy the presence of his beloved wife and of the books that had accompanied him throughout his life. His last abode was cluttered with bric-a-bracs bought at the local flea market; but it was Bouvier’s creative imagination that occupied most of the space in the room. It is his imagination that could take him back on the road and make him experience new adventures. This time the journey would not be long. One could say that Bouvier found himself on the other side of Cavafy’s image of a journey. Although he realised that there was no ship left in the harbour that would carry him away, he did not feel unhappy or destitute. He had all he needed: food, sleep, the warmth of the sunshine moving through the room, a good book. He has reached ‘the Ultima Thule of his wanderlust’. And, just like Zbigniew Herbert’s poetic persona, Mr. Cogito, he thanked gods for having created this world, so beautiful and so diverse. Like other travellers I have mentioned today – Stempowski, Fermor, Chatwin, Thomas, Macfarlane – as well as those I have discussed on other occasions, like Sebald and Walser, Nicolas Bouvier was seduced by this world ‘forever and without redemption’”. The lecture was attended by students and literary scholars from the Faculty of Language and Literature. After the lecture, Marek Zagańczyk answered questions and had an informal talk with members of the audience.

Le 14 janvier 2020, la Faculté de philologie de l’Université de Bialystok a accueilli Marek Zagańczyk – un essayiste bien connu, éditeur, rédacteur en chef adjoint de longue date de «Zeszyty Literackie» (Cahiers littéraires), un magazine bien connu des amateurs de littérature et de haute culture. Il est également le conservateur de l’héritage et directeur des archives de Paweł Hertz, dont les oeuvres collectées sont publiées par lui. Marek Zagańczyk a publié les recueils d’essais et de croquis suivants: Krajobrazy i portrety (Paysages et portraits) (1999), Droga do Sieny (Route de Sienne) (2005), Cyprysy i topole (Cyprès et peupliers) (2012) Berlińskie widoki (Vues de Berlin) (2019). En tant qu’écrivain et passionné d’histoire, Zagańczyk est aussi passionné par l’Italie depuis de nombreuses années. Ce sont ses voyages en Italie, dans les profondeurs – littéraires et réels – de la Méditerranée, dont Marek Zagańczyk a parlé à midi en janvier dans l’Auditorium de la Faculté de philologie dans le cadre de la série «Conférences de Maîtres», initiée en 2017. Le titre de la conférence était: À propos de l’écriture de voyage. L’orateur a été annoncé et présenté par le dr hab. Violetta Wejs‑Milewska, professeur de l’Université de Białystok. L’auteur s’est concentré principalement sur les témoignages du XXe siècle, les rapports de voyage, pas seulement en prose. L’orateur s’est intéressé à la poésie de Constantin Cavafy, aux essais de voyage de Zbigniew Herbert, à une réflexion de Jerzy Stempowski et Paweł Hertz sur l’écriture de voyage, à L’hiver mediterranéen de Robert Kaplan, aux oeuvres d’Edward Thomas, Robert Frost, Robert Macfarlane, Nicolas Bouvier. Un long et fascinant voyage essayiste à travers les textes et les pays s’est terminé par un éloge particulier des «dieux» pour «créer un monde beau et différent». Le point central des délibérations de Zagańczyk fut une réflexion sur les écrits du Suisse, Nicolas Bouvier (1929–1998): «Les livres de Bouvier, écrits après la fin de l’expédition, sont à nouveau une évasion, une préparation aux prochains voyages, une lutte avec le monde, poursuivie jusqu’au bout, jusqu’à une longue maladie et la mort en février 1998. Car, comme le note Bouvier: «Un voyage n’a pas besoin de justification. Il s’avère bientôt que c’est une fin en soi. Vous pensez que vous allez simplement partir en voyage, mais bientôt cela commence à vous éduquer et à vous changer». À la fin de sa vie, Bouvier écrivit un croquis de sa chambre, d’où il ne pouvait plus aller nulle part. Il a longtemps apprécié la présence d’un être cher et les livres qui l’accompagnaient. Il a meublé cette pièce avec des objets qu’il avait achetés à un marché aux puces, mais sa propre imagination littéraire y occupait le plus d’espace. C’est grâce à elle qu’il est revenu à son voyage, c’est grâce à elle qu’il s’est replongé dans l’aventure. Cette fois, il n’est pas allé loin. Il était, pour ainsi dire, de l’autre côté du tableau des errances de Cavafy. Mais il ne se sentait pas malheureux, ruiné. Il savait qu’il n’y avait plus d’autre bateau pour lui. Que la nourriture, la chaleur de la lumière du soleil qui traverse la pièce, le sommeil et un livre sont tout ce dont il a besoin, «une ultima thule de ses désirs errants». Et comme M. Cogito d’Herbert, il a remercié ses dieux d’avoir créé un monde beau et différent. Comme les autres vagabonds, ceux que j’ai cités comme Stempowski, Fermor, Chatwin, Thomas, Macfarlane et ceux que j’ai lus à une autre occasion, comme Sebald ou Walser, ont été séduits par ce monde «pour toujours et sans pardon». La conférence a été suivie par un groupe d’étudiants, de doctorants et d’érudits littéraires de la Faculté de philologie qui, après la conférence, ont eu l’occasion de poser des questions et de parler à l’invité.
