Abstract

The topic of the paper is a discourse on multiculturalism in Japanese cinema, whose creators are trying to deal with the diversity and the presence of ethnic minorities. Despite the superficial presentation of complex social processes and a stereotypical look at the cultural differences and the issue of racial discrimination, films reflect the fundamental problems associated with national identity in an era of increasing globalization. Starting from the theoretical considerations suggested by Tessa Morris-Suzuki and Mika Ko, the author analyzes the problem of multiculturalism on the basis of the film image of Okinawans, referring also to other minorities appearing in Japanese films.
