Печаль воспоминаний…. Пространство – время – телесная проксемия в рассказе Поздний час Ивана Бунина

Abstract

The present work takes up the attempt at an analysis of three basic elements in the story by Iwan Bunin "Late hour" (1938): a place, time and a corporeal proxemics (Edward Hall). The focus is put on semantic opposites, such as close – far: Russia – France, a ship – a city, a way of life – a way to cemetery which define space and time frames of the work. Returning to his hometown, the main character of the story recalls and experiences his former immature love once again, seeing and touching as well both familiar and close to his heart objects (a bridge, a pavement, a curb, a gate) which bring him feelings and emotions. Looking back upon his past, he shows the reader the corporeal view of his beloved girl as well as mentions its details (smell of her hair, warmth of her body, brightness in her eyes). It is significant that the corporeal images (holding hands, a kiss) become timeless symbols in the story by Bunin. They are endowed with “a huge sensible power” (L. Iezuitova) and at the same time they process this sensuality and reveal a spiritual side of carnality.
