Abstract

By the end of the eighteenth century elementary educational system was connected with parish churches while secondary educational system was connected with colleges of the Jesuits, the Piaristis and other monasteries. In the following century education on the area of the Congress Kingdom of Poland had a state character but after the year 1864 there still existed elementary schools by the parishes. After the January Uprising local administration of the commune council took care of the schools. Since than Russian language was introduced to schools and the government did not allow the clergy to be in contact with schools. After the year 1905 gradually Polish language was coming back to schools, private schools were set up and the clergymen could freely teach religion there. The author presented the relationship of the church and the government of the Congress Kingdom of Poland as regards elementary education. The work is based on archival sources, mainly on the sources from the Diocese Record Office in Łomża. The files have been brought here from the former Augustów or Sejny Diocese. The government sent the same regulations and orders to all the Bishops, so the situation in the Augustów or Sejny Diocese was similar to those in the remaining seven dioceses of the Congress Kingdom of Poland.
