Abstract

A Map of New England Johna Fostera wydaje się przedstawiać dobrze zorganizowaną sieć angielskich miast na terenie kolonii Massachusetts. Mapa ta została jednak dołączona do wydanej w Bostonie w 1677 r. narracji Williama Hubbarda A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England, która traktuje o konflikcie kolonistów z rdzennymi mieszkańcami Ameryki podczas tzw. wojny króla Filipa. Uważna lektura tekstu Hubbarda pozwala zauważyć, że jego narracja jest zbudowana wokół walki „ludzi Boga” z ich „pogańskimi sąsiadami”, co jednoznacznie nawiązuje do purytańskiej wyobraźni, rozumienia świata i dramatyzowania rzeczywistości poprzez wpisywanie w nią etosu walki z niewidzialnym zagrożeniem, pochodzącym nie z tego świata. Kluczem do odkrycia napięcia ukrytego w mapie Fostera jest naniesienie na mapę opisanych przez Hubbarda tzw. przypadków Bożej opatrzności (providences) oraz wczytanie się w utwór Benjamina Tompsona Marlburyes Fate (1676). Autorka proponuje ponowne odczytanie Mapy Nowej Anglii Fostera w kontekście wymienionych utworów.

On the first map of New England printed in America, there is not a single table depicting the indigenous peoples of the northeast coast of America; we are accustomed to such information being added by Italian, Dutch, or French cartographers of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The map appears to depict the English territory, a well-organized network of towns and cities, and varied terrain, which is rather peculiar, since John Foster’s Map of New England was included with Rev. William Hubbard’s book, A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England, published in Boston and London (1677). Only after reading the accompanying description does it become clear that the map depicts towns and cities that suffered in skirmishes during King Philip’s War. Instead, a careful reading of Rev. Hubbard’s text makes it possible to see that his narrative revolves around the struggle of the “men of God” against their “pagan neighbours,” which clearly alludes to the Puritan imagination, understanding of the world and dramatizing reality by inscribing an ethos of struggle against an invisible threat that comes not from this world but only manifests itself in the colonists’ surroundings. The key to Foster’s map for deciphering this threat and seeing the presence of seemingly absent “pagan neighbours” on the map is to identify and map instances of Divine Providence and to read Benjamin Tompson’s heroic poem Marlburyes Fate (1676). The author proposes a rereading of Foster’s Map of New England in the context of Rev. Hubbard’s A Narrative of the Troubles with the Indians in New-England and Tompson’s Marlburyes Fate.
