In this paper, we presented the results of an empirical project work, which aimed at analyzing the translation of occasional phraseological units (PUs) found in a short story collection Croatian Tales of Long Ago (1916), written by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić, praised as the best Croatian writer for children. The empirical research included several steps. First, we had to detect occasional PUs in the source text, i.e. in eight tales written in Croatian (How Quest Sought the Truth; Fisherman Plunk and His Wife; Reygoch; Bridesman Sun and Bride Bridekins; Stribor’s Forest; Little Brother Primrose and Sister Lavender; Toporko and His Nine Brothers; Yagor), and in the next step our task was to find the translation of the gathered corpora in the two target languages: German and Russian. The third step included the application of analytical tools and a contrastive approach to phraseological units in three languages. Nataša Pavlović (2015: 88–92) provides a theoretical frame with analytical tools for the translation of PUs. In our approach to figurative language, we assume that variation in the source language is a conceptual phenomenon, and that it was of great help to translators of the two analyzed target languages.
