Social Integration of Roma in Poland – Between Marginalisation and Inclusion

Tytuł: Social Integration of Roma in Poland – Between Marginalisation and Inclusion
Autorzy: Zielińska-Szczepkowska, Joanna; Wysocka, Magdalena; Łojko, Majka
Abstrakt: Goal – The aim of this article is to present the process of social integration as assessed by Roma communities in Poland. Research methodology – The analytical material was obtained on the basis of a survey conducted among 200 representatives of the Roma community living in Poland. Interviews were conducted using an author’s questionnaire. Score/results – Based on the collected empirical material, it can be concluded that Roma are an ethnic group with a strong sense of cultural identity, which contributes to their low level of integration into the country of residence. Originality/value – Many studies have focused on analysing the inclusion of Roma in European countries. At the same time, there is a shortage of scientific studies resulting from empirical research relating to the social integration of Roma. This issue is still a relatively new research area, which requires systematic research and in-depth analysis in order to design the most effective measures. The research results that have been presented are of twofold nature, being both research and application-based. It is therefore possible that they may serve as a basis for integration. The identification of the expectations, views and needs of the Polish Roma may contribute to the design of social integration programs that are tailored to their needs.

Tytuł: Economic Sustainability of the EU Member States in 2023
Autorzy: Zielińska, Joanna Bogna
Abstrakt: Goal – The aim of the paper is to evaluate economic sustainability of EU member states in 2023 and to analyse the relationships between economic sustainability and their level of development. The study concentrated on three research questions: Do the EU countries represent high diversity in terms of economic sustainability? Is the economic sustainability of member states related to their level of socio-economic development? Which elements of economic sustainability display higher interdependence with socio-economic development of the EU countries? Research methodology – TOPSIS method was used to classify the EU member states on their economic sustainability with division to classes of objects with similar features. The relationship between economic sustainability, as well as its partial variables, and socio-economic development was examined with the use of the Spearman’s and Pearson’s correlation coefficients. Score/results – The economic sustainability among the EU member states in 2023 displays medium level and low diversity. A strong positive relationship between economic sustainability and the level of human development was confirmed. The importance of innovation and monetary policy for economic sustainability has risen as another key finding of the research. Originality/value – The originality of the paper is represented by the chosen research method and by the set of diagnostic variables. The research identified features strengthening and hindering economic sustainability which can be treated as policy recommendations.

Tytuł: Selected Issues Related to the Activities of Non-Govermental Organisations in Poland in Their Work for Refugees
Autorzy: Zdanowicz, Mieczysława; Sołkiewicz, Weronika
Abstrakt: Goal – The aim of this article is to analyse selected problems related to the activities of NGOs in Poland working for refugees. In particular, the following issues are discussed: the definition and types of NGOs, the legal basis for the activities of NGOs in Poland, actions taken by NGOs in connection with the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border. Research methodology – The research methods employed in this article include the legal analysis and descriptive methods. Score/results – This article discusses theoretical issues concerning NGOs, including their definition and types, as well as the legal basis for the activities of NGOs working with refugees in Poland. All this has made it possible to analyse specific actions taken by NGOs in relation to the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border and to discuss specific problems faced by these organisations. Undoubtedly, the actions taken by these organisations are wide-ranging, complementing or sometimes even replacing the activities of the state. However, due to the problems faced by these organisations (in particular financial problems), their activities are limited. Originality/value – The article is unique because it collects and analyses the activities undertaken by NGOs on the Polish-Belarusian border and the problems they face.
