Autorzy: Buryk, Alena Abstrakt: In this article the author examines establishment and development of Belarusian‑Polish cooperation in the economic sphere in the first post‑socialist years. The author determines the main forms of economic cooperation; she characterizes social‑economic conditions of development of border regions. The researcher emphasizes different economic potential of Belarusian and Polish border areas. It was a reason for the activization of border cooperation. One of the most successful forms of this cooperation became Euroregions. The author underlines that a significant role in increasing trade contacts played such economic institutes as joint trading houses and the Chamber of Commerce. The researcher analyses problems and deterrents of economic partnership, she shows that strict customs and border control became the main barrier to the development of this cooperation. A border as a meeting point of differences becomes a “transitional object” and an object of permanent transgression. The paper draws attention to the significance of the religious factor within existing multicultural contexts as well as highlights the impact that religious pluralism might have on identity. The author explores some key markers of the border of differences: values, individual rights, freedom of expression, family – gender relations, the changes in the European religious landscape and different understanding of religious tolerance. The author examines such problems as religious appearance, religious landscape and its visualization in public life. The otherness of religious appearance and public demonstration of religious symbols has become the subject of restrictive and prohibitive acts in a number of European countries. The problem of cultural adaptation, its borders, as well as dialogue and compromise possibilities between various cultural traditions are analyzed in the sense of European discourse. The author is trying to describe, at least partially, possible national and ethnic processes on borderlands of Poland and the European Union. These processes are presented on the example of the analysis of chosen indicators being characteristic of an indigenous Ukrainian minority in Podlasie and its transformation. The author is trying to show nation-creating processes in the borderland, possibilities of transformations and possible ends to which these processes can lead the given group. As one of the possible ends of this process, there is presented a theoretical concept of the cultural nation. The article is divided into three parts: 1) a theoretical part, a description of the assumption of cultural nation 2) a description of the current conditions of the Ukrainian minority in Podlasie, and 3) available ways of the evolution and the development of this national group.
