Studia Redaktor(rzy): Ławski, Jarosław Abstrakt: The publication presented here is the result of the Polish and Lithuanian research project entitled “Bilingualism in Central and Eastern Europe. Literature, language, culture” that has been carried out since 2015 in close cooperation by the Department of Philological Studies “East–West” of the University of Białystok and the Academy of Education of the University of Vytautas Magnus in Kaunas. The fourth, international, conference in the series took place in Vilnius on the 28-29th of September 2023, with the motto: “Multi-cultural Vilnius: Tradition and modernity. Literature – language – testimonies of history. Jubilee session on the 700th anniversary of the City of Vilnius”. An important co-organiser of the session of multi-culturality was the Museum of Adam Mickiewicz affiliated at the University of Vilnius. The participants of the project once again attempted to address the cultural consequences of the poly- and bilingualism of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Republic of Poland, and the contemporary Republic of Lithuania. The following topics were proposed for consideration:– The image of Vilnius in literature and art. Interdisciplinary aspects.– The languages of the residents of Vilnius, and their records in literature and art.– Multicultural nature of the city and of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Literary and artistic images, linguistic approaches.– The works of authors from Vilnius and Lithuania in the context of bilingualism and polylingualism.– Travellers from Eastern and Western Europe in Vilnius and their presentation of the city and its people.– Mythical and symbolic spaces of Vilnius in literature and art.– Painting, sculpture, music, theatre, opera, and film – their literary presentations.– Vilnius and form: generic and genre realisations of the vision of the city.– Geopoetics as an approach to presenting the image of Vilnius. – The language of writers from the Polish-Lithuanian and Polish-Baltic States borderlands.– The Lithuanian-Slavic and Baltic-Slavic borderlands in the literary works of Poland and the Baltic States. 35 researchers from Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, Taiwan, and the UK participated in the project. The project was supervised by: On part of Lithuania: Professor Andrzej Baranow (1959–2024) and Professor Jarosław Ławski from the Department of Philological Studies “East–West” of the University of Białystok. The monograph is dedicated to the memory of Professor Andrzej Baranow, a scholar who focused on the multiculturalism in Central and Eastern Europe and in Lithuania, the organiser of multiple academic sessions, including in Vilnius, Šeteniai, Bareikiškės, Anykščiai, and Białystok. The scholar passed away in 2024, in Vilnius. The volume features an introduction by the editor, Professor Jarosław Ławski. Apart from the Polish table of contents, the volume contains one in Lithuanian language. The presented studies are grouped into the following sections: I. Intersections, syntheses, and myths; II. The nineteenth century; III. The inter-war period, the Great War; IV. After 1945: The post-war era; V. After the years 1989/1992: Contemporary era. The volume contains articles written in the Polish, English, Ukrainian, and Russian language. Most of them discuss the works of Polish writers who were connected to Vilnius, but also the works of Tadeusz Bułharyn, Tomas Venclova, Josif Brodsky, Andrius Tapinas, and modern Lithuanian poetry.; Pristatoma monografija yra Lenkijos ir Lietuvos mokslinio projekto „Bilingwizm w Europie Środkowo-Wschodniej. Literatura, język, kultura” [„Dvikalbystė Vidurio ir Rytų Europoje. Literatūra, kalba, kultūra“], kuris nuo 2015 m. įgyvendinamas glaudžiai bendradarbiaujant Balstogės universiteto Filologinių tyrimų skyriui „Wschód–Zachód” [„Rytai-Vakarai“] ir Vilniaus pedagoginei akademijai, veikiančiai prie Vytauto Didžiojo universiteto Kaune, rezultatas. 2023 m. rugsė jo 28–29 d. Vilniuje vyko IV tarptautinio pobūdžio konferencija, kurios tema – „Daugiakultūris Vilnius: tradicija ir modernumas. Literatūra – kalba – istorijos liudijimai. Jubiliejinė sesija, skirta Vilniaus miesto 700-mečiui“. Svarbus sesijos apie daugiakultūriškumą bendraorganizatorius buvo Vilniaus universiteto Ado mo Mickevičiaus muziejus. Projekto rengėjai dar kartą bandė atkreipti dėmesį į buvusios Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės, Abiejų Tautų Respublikos ir šiuo laikinės Lietuvos Respublikos daugiakalbystės ir dvikalbystės kultūrines pase kmes. Mokslininkams buvo pasiūlyta apsvarstyti šias temas: – Vilniaus įvaizdis literatūroje ir mene. Tarpdisciplininiai aspektai.– Vilniaus gyventojų kalbos; jų įrašai literatūroje ir mene.– Miesto ir Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės daugiakultūriškumas: literatūriniai ir meniniai įvaizdžiai, kalbiniai aspektai.– Vilniaus ir Lietuvos rašytojų kūryba dvikalbystės ir daugiakalbystės kontekste.– Rytų ir Vakarų Europos keliautojai Vilniuje – jų miesto ir žmonių įvaizdis.– Mitinės ir simbolinės Vilniaus erdvės literatūroje ir mene.– Tapyba, skulptūra, muzika, teatras, opera, kinas – jų literatūriniai pristatymai.– Vilnius ir forma: bendriniai ir žanriniai miesto vizijos įgyvendinimai.– Geopoetika kaip Vilniaus įvaizdžio fiksavimo būdas.– Lenkų-lietuvių, lenkų-baltų paribio rašytojų kalba.– Lietuvių-slavų, baltų-slavų paribis ir jo liūdijimai lenkų ir Baltijos šalių raštijoje. Projekte dalyvavo 35 mokslininkai iš Lenkijos, Lietuvos, Ukrainos, Taivano ir Didžiosios Britanijos. Projektui vadovavo: iš Lietuvos pusės prof. Andrzej Baranow (1959–2024) ir prof. Jarosław Ławski iš Balstogės universiteto Filologinių tyrimų skyriaus „Wschód – Zachód” [„Rytai-Vakarai“]. Monografija skirta profesoriaus Andrzejo Baranowo, daugiakultūriškumo Vidurio ir Rytų Europoje bei Lietuvoje tyrinėtojo, daugelio mokslinių sesijų Vilniuje, Šeteniuose, Bareikiškėse, Anykščiuose, Balsto gėje ir kt. organizatoriaus, atminimui. Mokslininkas netikėtai mirė 2024 metais Vilniuje. Knygoje pateikiama redaktoriaus prof. Jarosławo Ławskio įžanga. Be lenkų, yra čia ir turinys lietuvių kalba. O autobiograficznej książce Romualda Mieczkowskiego Autorzy: Bernacki, Marek Abstrakt: The article discusses the autobiographical, memoir book by Romuald Mieczkowski entitled „There Were Fabianiszki” [Były sobie Fabianiszki] (Vilnius 2020). The author of the book was born in 1950 in Vilnius, into a Polish family living in the suburban settlement of Fabianiszki. After many years, Mieczkowski – a renowned Vilnius poet, publicist and cultural animator – recalls his hometown and the people living there. According to prof. Bernacki, the main theme of Mieczkowski’s book is the issue of Polishness maintained in the unfavorable post-war reality of communist Lithuania thanks to attachment to the native land, use of the native language and membership in the Catholic community. An important element of Romuald Mieczkowski’s memories are numerous black and white photographs from the family archive, which not only have a documentary function, but also have the value of artistic expression. The first part presents the main issues related to the genealogy of Baedekers, their characteristic properties, the type of writer and recipient. Further sec tions provide an analysis of two books: Irenka dziewczynka z Wilna [Irenka, a Girl from Vilnius] and Sekrety Wilna [The Secrets of Vilnius]. The conclusion provides information about the role of this type of texts in forming the aesthetic sensitivity, the sense of identity, and building historical and cultural memory in young readers. It was awarded the title of the Book of the Year. The selection of the genre allowed Tapinas to create an alternative history of Vilnius, which was referred to as a post-modern pastiche. The novel features the transformation and interpretation of the city’s history, as well as a deformation of certain elements of collective memory. The alternative history of Vilnius references, among others, events that made newspaper headlines at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, which were placed by the author in the year 1905. The fact that the writer chose the steampunk genre may also evoke the question what it means to create an alternative history of a city like Vilnius. Does it indicate a crisis in the recognition of the paradigm of the city or the incapacity of writers to capture its phenomenon? However, part of Tapinas’s vision of Vilnius is not new at all. To the contrary: it is easily recognizable, as the author based the plot on press information from the last deca des and the transformation of legends and tales connected with Vilnius. The reception of the book requires attention from the reader. An insightful recipient will both search for real events while reading and track the cultural references, stereotypes, and elements of collective memory that are woven into the plot.
