The author is interested in the genesis of the novel associated especially with the American expedition of its author and his friend Karol Benni, a Warsaw doctor who was to meet the man who was the prototype of the main character of this work. The subject of the analysis is primarily the use of the Bible, whose reading of the 16th-century translation of Fr. Jakub Wujek is an important theme of the novel. As a regular contributor to Polish and Russian press, Miciński openly deplored Germans and favored the idea of united Slavs actively opposing German expansion. What was problematic for him was Russia’s attitude to Poland’s aspirations to independence. Referring to Sienkiewicz, Miciński wanted to minimize the risk of Polish-Russian confrontation after the war. He perceived the Polish-Ukrainian conflict of the 16th century, so aptly represented by Sienkiewicz in the Trylogy, as a sinister warning of what might happen in the future between Poland and Russia. Wokół refleksji Sienkiewicza-recenzenta Autorzy: Zabielski, Łukasz Abstrakt: The article is the result of reading the two reviews by Henryk Sienkiewicz in 1874, published in Warsaw’s „Niwa”. One of them concerns Maria Szeliga, the famous Maria Loevy (1854–1927), Polish writer, poet, journalist, and her work Urszula Zmorska, which is part of the first volume of Songs and Lyrics (1873). The second review examines Sphinx, the work of Octavo Feuillet (1821–1890), a French novelist and playwright. Sienkiewicz’s considerations are open, and discuss the issue of the role and functions that literature should play in society.
