Tytuł: Polskie ochotnicze formacje wojskowe podczas pierwszej wojny światowej i w okresie następnych dwóch lat (1914–1920)
Autorzy: Wrzosek, Mieczysław
Abstrakt: The first Polish voluntary military formations could be found in the territory
of the Central Powers already at the beginning of August 1914. These were Józef
Piłsudski’s rifle divisions, soon to be incorporated into the Polish Legions. After
the oath’s crisis of July 1917 there were two Polish formations of legionary roots:
the Polish Auxiliary Corps and the Polnische Wehrmacht.
Polish voluntary formations were also created on the Russian side. Originally
they were small legions formed in October 1914. Then, in September 1915, the
Brigade (since 1917 Division) of Polish Riflemen was established. Subsequently, larger tactical units were formed: the I Polish Corps, under organization since
August 1917; the II and the III Polish Corps, forming since December 1917.
In 1918–1919 in Ukraine and Siberia the 4. and the 5. Rifle Divisions were also
functioning.
All the activities aiming at the formation of Polish military forces on the
western powers’ side should also be highly evaluated. They resulted in the for-
mation of the Polish Army in France. In November 1918 it counted 17 thousand
soldiers, yet in 1919 it exceeded 68 thousand people.

Osadnicy i farmerzy. Amerykański Far West w świetle prasy warszawskiej II połowy XIX w.

Tytuł: Osadnicy i farmerzy. Amerykański Far West w świetle prasy warszawskiej II połowy XIX w.
Autorzy: Stocka, Anna
Abstrakt: American West offered numerous natural resources, not only gold, silver or other valuable metals, but above others, limitless areas of fertile land. That is why, there was a conviction that everybody could acquire farmland – almost for free. In this article I undertake to answer the question if Warsaw press of the second half of the XIX century accurately informed its readers about the colonization of the American Far West, and if so, whether and why there was an interest in the management of such great areas of prairie. Sygurd Wiśniowski was the one who had the greatest input into writing for Warsaw press about the management of the Great Plains, as he decided to buy a plot in Minnesota. In his reports sent to “Tygodnik Mód i Nowości”, he tried to show the life of an average American pioneer. He warned all those dreaming about their own piece of land against hasty decisions concerning emigration to the West, emphasizing that each settler had to have his own fund and be aware of the difficulties awaiting him – both during the crossing and in America. Colonization of the American West caused a certain interest in Warsaw press, apparently because of the fact that American corn effectively competed with that coming from the Russian Empire, which directly influenced economy of the Kingdom of Poland. The interest was even greater because of other heroes of the Far West – prospectors, Indians, the Chinese and, above others, Mormons.
