It concerns the employees as well as employers who are seeking suitable employees and they must know what skills are needed to develop their business. Adapting workers and businesses to the requirements of a changing economy becomes a condition of their survival and development. And these changes are related primarily to the processes of transformation and economic modernization, and globalization and internationalization of the economy. In this article factors influencing the increasing importance of intercultural competence in the Polish labour market and the implications of this change for employers and employees, that may occur in different types of organizations have been discussed. Intercultural competencies have been defined as knowledge, skills and attitudes to allow for establishing and maintaining positive personal contacts and professional relationships and effective communication with members of other cultures. The first part of this article concerns the factors of internationalization of the Polish labour market. This article is a short presentation of main events of the Year of Intercultural Dialogue in Poland. Moreover, this paper analyzes how journalists contributed to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. Building on the material from ethnographic fieldwork carried in an ethnically and religiously diverse community, it argues that the study of diversity in Poland needs to take into consideration one basic fact: namely to recognize that diversity in Poland has been developing in the context of one dominant culture and that this context strongly influences the relations between the majority and the minorities. This fact results in the presence of different cultural groups in the city public space, which at the same time becomes a field for manifestation of cultural identities, and meeting (or even clashing) of these groups. Resorting to documentary photography, the authoress attempts at observing the instances of multiculturalism in the space of Bialystok in order to create a typology of local intercultural relations. The laboratory metaphor used in the article reflects the dynamic quality of the observed phenomena: diverse cultural groups, reacting one with another as chemical components in a laboratory, constitute the local community with its particular symbols, practices, and problems. The public space they occupy and make use of is a place of a natural social experiment – the creation of a multicultural social order within the city boundaries.
