The author sees a parallel between Zygmunt Gloger’s writings and the cultural and educational initiatives undertaken by the periodical’s publisher. He describes the editorial board’s contribution to the development of research on Belarusian legends carried out by Wacłau Łastowski, his work as a secretary in the editorial board, the writings of Olgierd Bulba, and Sz. Jadwigin’s (Anton Lawicki’s) Letters from the Road, which contain notes on local history. They initiated, for example, the Society of Horse Races and the Vilna Society of Agriculture, which, apart from dealing with horse breeding and farming, were dedicated to education and cultural activities. They also supported the establishment and activities of the Society of Science and Art Museum and the Friends of Science Society in Vilna, whose purpose was to research national history and culture, as well as to preserve national heritage. Some landowners donated significant amounts of money; others–books, manuscripts, archival documents, works of art and exhibits. The paper reveals cultural realias of Belarusian-Polish borderland and the forms in which they are presented in Zygmunt Gloger’s essay.
