Abstrakt: Transhumanism, i.e. human striving to achieve immortality and divinity, has been a crucial part of German literature for a long time. In each historic and cultural period, this striving has assumed various forms. This study is devoted to some typological aspects of German literature as one of the ideological movements of modern transhumanism. We pursue the following points to analyze the stages of transhumanism in German literature. Additionally, the futurological projects of social transformations are presented. The paper discusses the forms of representation in contemporary culture as exemplified by an ideal society, transhumanism, transhuman, and post-human.

Autorzy: Липинская, Анастасия
Abstrakt: Popular culture easily incorporates issues widely discussed in mass media. The problems of transhumanism are no exception: nowadays the prospects of scientifically upgrading human mind and body are no longer regarded as pure fantasy, they seem quite realistic and ambiguous and as such are introduced into fiction. The multi-authored cycle Warhammer offers a variety of such motifs: it features distant future (although highly stylized and not based on strict scientific assumptions) where humans use advanced technologies of genetic engineering and prosthetics in order to survive in constant wars with alien races. The cycle is meant to be commercially successful and plays on popular fears, expectations and curiosity, but some of the best authors offer interesting insights into the topic and its ethical and philosophical implications. Also different stylistic means are chosen for different aspects, such as epic and historical allusions in depicting spacemarines (genetically modified soldiers) and motifs of traditional science fiction in showing interrelations between humans and machines.

Konflikty religijne w Świecie Dysku

Tytuł: Konflikty religijne w Świecie Dysku
Autorzy: Borowski, Marcin M.
Abstrakt: This article is focused on the concept of religious conflicts depicted in Terry Pratchett’s novels. The Discworld is a universe where such conflicts are related to the most significant matters. These matters include standing the test of time of cities and states, the policy of governments, the national and individual identity. Pratchett takes advantage of his fictional world to criticize religion and, as a result, to elaborate on the human nature. Furthermore, he provides tips for a future and suggests that a change is necessary. These suggestions are not clear; they are rather only outlines of changes which consist in cooperation, mutual comprehension and open-mindedness. The open-mindedness of religion to other faith, to its followers’ needs and to another man. The open-mindedness of all people to a non-believer, an atheist, an immigrant, a woman and anybody who can be seen as different.
