Autorzy: Roszkowska, Ewa
Abstrakt: Purpose – The article presents a proposal for a measure of the similarity of regions in terms of the structure of the elderly population. Research method – Using the proposed measure, the similarity of population structures aged 60 and above was assessed for the regions of Poland in 2017, where the age groups: 60-74, 75-84 and 85 plus were defined as components of the structure. Results – The research results demonstrate that Poland’s voivodeships differ with respect to the structure of people aged 60 and above. The spatial polarization of the country with respect to the components of the structure of an elderly population can be observed. Originality /value – Identification of the regional differentiation of the situation in terms of the size and age structure of the elderly population can be helpful in planning activities within the silver economy policy adapted to the situation in each region.

Tytuł: Positioning equity mutual funds performance with the use of various risk measures
Autorzy: Żebrowska-Suchodolska, Dorota; Karpio, Andrzej
Abstrakt: Purpose – Verifying the hypothesis that the ranking positions of funds are not repeatable during periods of changing market conditions. The subject of research are equity investment funds operating on the Polish market in the years 2003-2017. Research method – The research employed various risk measures appearing in investment performance indicators: as measures of variability relative to the average rate of return or market benchmark as well as measures of potential investor losses. Performance comparisons were made in five-year subperiods taking into account the monthly percentage changes in participation units. In each subperiod, a number of rankings based on the following indicators: Sharpe, Information Ratio, Sortino, Martin, Pain, Calmar, RVaR, mRVaR and CS were created. Results – There are no funds that would occupy high ranking positions created on the basis of various indicators. Positions taken by equity funds change randomly regardless of the situation on the capital market. Originality /value / implications /recommendations – The study uses a wide range of measures that differ in many important parameters from an investment point of view. In particular, this applies not only to risk measures, but also to benchmarks. The authors tried to increase the value of the study by associating subperiods with periods of changing market conditions. This allows conclusions to be drawn regarding the capital market segment. The presented studies can be extended to funds from other risk classes.

Tytuł: Mainstream economics versus heterodox economics – between dispute and dialogue
Autorzy: Kiełczewski, Dariusz
Abstrakt: Purpose – The purpose of this article is to highlight the differences between mainstream and heterodox economics and essence of the dispute between them, as well as to indicate that this dispute results from attachment to a reductionist Cartesian research approach. Research method – The work utilises a review and analysis of the literature on the subject, deductive and inductive inference, as well as a linguistic descriptive method and tabular summaries. Results – The author concludes that the contemporary discussion between economic trends can be reduced to a confrontation of two reductionisms in the perception of economics: individualistic and objective, as well as social and normative. Breaking this methodological limitation provides an opportunity to search for pluralistic (integrated) economic positions in the future. Originality / value / implications / recommendations – Awareness of methodological aspects of the dispute between economic trends. Indication of the possibility of building pluralistic and integrated positions. Usefulness in building economic theory. Awareness of the need for diversity in economic research.
