Abstrakt: The so called third sector (including non-profit organizations and associations) is a basic part of a civil society. However, not all its elements perform a function of the so called social glue as there are associations open to different environments, but there are also such that represent interests of only one community. Some organizations serve building bridges and crossing borders whereas others build walls and barriers. This article analyzes both types of organizations and associations indicating differences in their structures and functions. Next, the author analyzes the impact of social and economic conditions of south-eastern Poland upon models of action of social organizations. One of the elements of the situation within which the organizations operate is the Podkarpacie is the inhabitants’ distrust to formalized and bureaucratized forms of activity.

Abstrakt: This article is the result of the research carried out in Rzeszow in June 2006. Its aim is to show how spatial and social boundaries between the
city housing districts are perceived. Determination of spatial boundaries between individual districts is based on indicating those districts that are recognized by the respondents as the best and the worst to live in. Differences in the evaluations of individual districts, evaluations of their
inhabitants and the level of the respondents’ identifi cation with their place of residence may prove the existence of social boundaries within the city. Social boundaries between individual districts are established on the basis of: 1. The indication of a degree to which a position of a given district (in the hierarchy “good”/ “bad”) influences the evaluation of its inhabitants made by the respondents. In other words, how the inhabitants of a given district differ from other dwellers of the city according to such features they are attributed with as, e.g.: honesty, diligence, tolerance or social activity. 2. The indication of a degree to which individual districts differ from other districts in Rzeszow according to ecological features, the level of urban and economic infrastructure in the inhabitants’ opinion. 3. The indication of a degree to which inhabitants of individual districts identify themselves with the province, city, housing district and street they are living in. This analysis also aims at determining a degree to which social boundaries overlap spatial ones.

Abstrakt: The article analyzes the relations between local and regional identity of the Podkarpackie Province inhabitants. Eight years after the new territorial division of Poland, the question whether institutionalization of regional borders in a form of provincial borders leads to the creation of regional ties still remains topical. The subject literature emphasizes the fact that before the country’s administrative reform this form of identification in Poland was much weaker as compared to local and national identifi cations. Taking the above remarks into consideration, the following possibilities can be distinguished within dependencies between local and regional identity in the Podkarpackie Province: a) the stronger identification with the local community, the weaker identification with the region; b) the stronger identification with the local community, the stronger identification with the region; and c) there are no dependencies between both forms of territorial identifi cation.
The attempt to answer the question about the boundaries of social worlds of the Podkarpacie inhabitants is based on the assumption that borders are a complicated cultural model embracing concepts ranging from a line drawn on the ground and the idea of a difference as such. If, however, a border is a “product” of a given community, then even an arbitrarily determined line is subject to symbolic re-interpretation. It means that borders, including local and regional ones, are of a dynamic and process-like nature.
