Autorzy: Fałtynowicz, Michał
Abstrakt: The article analyses Adam Zagajewski’s poems that observe the elegiac convention. While summarizing the existing critical thought on the function of elegia in Zagajewski’s poetry, the author presents his own interpretations of selected works. He proves that the elegiac form, realised in Zagajewski’s work in many different ways, is not just an expression of the poet’s nostalgia for the past. By recalling past events, by remembering his deceased friends, and bymaintaining thememory of the victims of the Holocaust, Zagajewski makes the lyrical hero of his poems the guardian of the past. This remembrance must be allowed to influence the future.</summary>

Autorzy: Kamionowski, Jerzy
Abstrakt: This paper analyzes the novel Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. in its thematic and formal dimensions. The author aims, first, to identify the work’s references to scientific issues concerning Darwin’s theory of evolution and so-called “social Darwinism.” Secondly, he identifies the novel’s strictly literary references, the citation of which allows him to draw conclusions about the nature of its intertextuality. Of particular relevance here is the relationship of the Galapagos with the biblical myth of the Flood. As a result, the author of the article substantiates the hypothesis that Vonnegut consistently cultivates, for deeply didactic purposes, postmodern metafiction with a moralistic message.</summary>

Abstrakt: The aim of this article is to analyse metaphorical spaces in two dramas by Jerzy Szaniawski: Murzyn. Komedia w trzech aktach [A Negro. A comedy in three acts] from 1917 and Kowal, pieniądze i gwiazdy. Sztuka w trzech aktach [A blacksmith, money, and stars. A play in three acts] from 1948. Drawing attention to the fact that the world presented in most of Szaniawski’s dramas is connected with the province, the author demonstrates how realistic spaces, far from the tumult of the big world, contrast with the metaphorical spaces of the protagonists’ longing, freedom and dreams. These spaces are extremely complex and varied, marking out and at the same time differentiating the mental area in which the protagonists function and influencing their decisions.</summary>

Autorzy: Zimnoch, Karol
Abstrakt: The article analyses the concept of Polish national identity in Juliusz Słowacki’s Lilla Weneda. The author argues that Słowacki shows in the drama the genesis of Poles as a nation which came into being as a result of the bloody conquest of the Venedians by the Lechits. By doing that, the poet uses irony to deconstruct Polish identity based on a sense of injustice and marked by unprocessed trauma. In his considerations, he takes into account the theatrical reception of the tragedy, which proves its ambivalent character.</summary>
